The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on December 9, 2020 approved the Department of Telecom (DoT) proposal for expansion of broadband through public Wi-Fi networks under the framework of Prime Minister's Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI).

This framework furthers the objective of the National Digital Communications Policy, 2018 (NDCP) to build a robust digital communications infrastructure. The PM-WANI framework envisages the provision of broadband through public Wi-Fi hotspot providers. It will have components like Public Data Office (PDO), Public Data Office Aggregator (PDOA), App Providers and Central Registry.

How to access

Potential users who want to access broadband over public Wi-Fi need to download the relevant app, authenticate and then access broadband at any public Wi-Fi hotspot.

When the user reaches a public Wi-Fi hotspot, the app on the mobile phone will show the various available networks. The user can then choose the preferred public Wi-Fi network, pay an amount - either online or via voucher - and use the network until the balance is exhausted.
